Seasonal Assistant Lab/Ops, Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District

Job Description: ABOUT THE AGENCY The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District (the District) is an independent special district dedicated to protecting public health by controlling rats, flies, mosquitoes, red imported fire ants, and other vector related problems. The operation of the District is overseen by a District Manager and Board of Trustees comprised of 35 members, each appointed by their city of residence (34) with one member representing the County. The District has a full-time staff of 69 employees and a seasonal staff of approximately 70 employees that assist in the day-to-day operations. The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District’s seasonal assistant position employees/staff may get the opportunity to enjoy working in the following teams (no prior mosquito killing experience required, earn while you learn): Scientific Technical Services: Set and pick up mosquito traps in designated locations around the county. Utilize a microscope to identify and count specimens. Maintain traps and other laboratory/field equipment. Conduct data entry. Participate in a variety of surveillance and biological control program tasks, including specimen collections, insect rearing, mosquitofish husbandry, and disease testing. Special Services: Inspect and treat designated locations for mosquito reduction in exciting places like flood channels, storm drains, and marshlands. You’ve never experienced nature like this! Spray Route: Navigate urban sprawl and concrete jungles while finding and destroying mosquito larvae in street gutters and catch basins! Door to Door: Meet your fellow county residents while going door to door in local neighborhoods to educate the community about mosquitoes, vector-borne diseases and the shared responsibility for mosquito control. You’ll learn to help the District notify residents of disease presence and upcoming treatments for mosquitoes. You’ll perform inspections and chemical treatments of mosquito breeding sources in a variety of property settings. RIFA (Red Imported Fire Ants): Inspect and treat scenic locations across the county, like regional parks, cemeteries and golf courses, for Red Imported Fire Ants If you would like to be considered for a specific team, include relevant experience in your application. Preference does not guarantee placement. Seasonal Assistants are assigned based on District needs, which may change throughout the season.
