The Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California (MVCAC) provides leadership to and advocacy on behalf of the more than 70 mosquito and vector control agencies in California which share a unified purpose to protect public health through research and collaboration. MVCAC’s 10-member Board of Directors is comprised of mosquito and vector control agency managers from across the state representing California’s diverse geographic regions.

Advocate
MVCAC is the leading voice and advocate for mosquito and vector control in the California Legislature. Each year, the organization hosts a Legislative Day at the State Capitol when participants meet with legislators and decision makers to promote the importance of mosquito and vector control. MVCAC’s Legislative Committee and Legislative Advocates monitor legislation that could potentially affect mosquito and vector control practices and mobilize member agencies to take action. At the district level, MVCAC members promote grassroots outreach by maintaining relationships with their local policymakers and stakeholders, keeping MVCAC’s efforts at the forefront of legislators’ and policymakers’ agendas.
Educate
Education and awareness are critical to effective mosquito and vector control throughout California. MVCAC seeks to increase public awareness and educate Californians on the importance of protecting public health through mosquito and vector control through a variety of activities including “Mosquito Awareness Week” which takes place every April. MVCAC also engages partners in educational opportunities and seeks to collaborate with stakeholders to reinforce education efforts and continue to promote the prevention of mosquito and vector-borne diseases. The MVCAC website is also a resource for the public on how to reduce the risk of mosquitoes and mosquito bites.
Innovate
MVCAC hosts an annual conference that allows members access to the latest information on changing trends in mosquito and vector control, discussions on pending legislation, opportunities to complete continuing education units, and network with other mosquito and vector control experts in order to improve strategies to protect public health and the environment. MVCAC provides a forum for its members to collaborate with each other and support advancements in vector surveillance, laboratory techniques, and vector control and management. As an association, MVCAC played an integral role in the development and implementation of the California Surveillance Gateway (CalSurv Gateway), one of the most advanced and robust surveillance databases of its kind in the country.
Coordinate
MVCAC partners with the California Department of Public Health to maintain mosquito and vector control certification and continuing education for all mosquito and vector control technicians. This partnership ensures that member agencies receive the appropriate training based on the latest science, allowing California mosquito and vector control technicians to use the most advanced techniques, as well as products registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. MVCAC collaborates with other state and federal agencies, such as the California State Water Resources Control Board, to ensure that the best vector management practices are implemented across the state to achieve the common goals of protecting public health and the environment, while allowing for innovation and development.
