Pilot / Seasonal Pilot, Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control District (BCMVCD)

The District is currently looking to fill a pilot position with the District, either permanent full-time or seasonally.

ABOUT THE DISTRICT
The Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control District (BCMVCD) is an independent special district that serves all of
Butte County, except the small area served by the Durham Mosquito Abatement District. Additionally, BCMVCD serves
Hamilton City and other small areas of Glenn County. In addition to mosquito and mosquito-borne disease surveillance
and control, the District also conducts regular surveillance for ticks, yellow jackets, and other nuisance pests and vectors
of disease. The mission of BCMVCD is primarily to suppress mosquito-transmitted disease and to also reduce the
annoyance levels of mosquitoes and diseases associated with ticks, fleas and other vectors through environmentally
compatible control practices and public education.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This position serves as a pilot for Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control District flight operations, Aviation Wing, and
for support duties as assigned by the District’s management or Pilot II.

Surveillance Assistant (Seasonal), Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District

Description: Under the direction of the Scientific Programs Manager (SPM) and Lead Biologist (LB), the
Surveillance Assistant (SA) supports the daily workings of the laboratory by carrying out all
tasks assigned by the SPM and LB.

The SA may participate in various fieldwork activities and research projects as assigned by the
SPM and LB. This laboratory and fieldwork supports the primary objectives of the District in
its effortsto control disease-carrying vectors and minimize their potential threat to public health
and comfort. This is a full-time seasonal position, not to exceed 1,500 hours per calendar year.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Include but are not limited to:
▪ Field collection of mosquitoes and trap placement.
▪ May assist in larval and adult mosquito identification.
▪ Collection of ticks and other vectors in the field.
▪ May assist in maintenance of the District’s insectary and mosquito colonies.
▪ Participate in the field collection of wild birds submitted by the public via the California
Department of Public Health dead bird program.
▪ Process various biological specimens (tissues, blood, whole carcasses, etc.) to be tested at
the District laboratory or sent to diagnostic laboratories for evaluation of disease pathogens
in vectors.
▪ Maintain the laboratory in a clean and efficient manner.
▪ Maintenance and care of sentinel chicken flocks may be assigned.
▪ Field work including mosquito and vector control and related research projects may be
assigned as needed.
WORK HOURS
▪ 40 hour workweek, Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (Hours may vary according to
daily work schedule.)
▪ Overtime work may be required

Field Assistant (Seasonal), Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District

Job Description:

The Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District (MSMVCD) is accepting applications for the Field Assistant (Seasonal) position. 

DEFINITION

Under the direction of the Field Supervisors (FS), the Field Assistant (FA) is responsible for all tasks assigned in support of the District’s daily field operations.

SCOPE OF POSITION

  • Provides support on various projects and assists the Vector Control Technicians in their daily mosquito and vector surveillance and control work. Duties include but are not limited to performing service requests, mosquito surveillance, and mosquito control work associated with catch basins and ponds.
  • This is a full-time seasonal position, not to exceed 1500 hours per calendar year.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Include but are not limited to:

  • Routine mosquito control and surveillance operations
  • Assisting with service requests
  • Collecting mosquitofish
  • Assisting in maintenance of equipment, vehicles, and grounds
  • Responding to service requests pertaining to yellowjackets and performing yellowjacket control

WORK HOURS

  • 40-hour work week, Monday-Friday. Hours may vary according to daily work schedule. Overtime work may be required.

The starting hourly pay rate for the position is $23.00 and increases with each season of service to a current maximum of $27/hour in year five.

Laboratory Seasonal Vector Assistant, Shasta Mosquito & Vector Control District

The position of Seasonal Vector Assistant (SVA) is a temporary position which requires candidates to be available to work a minimum of 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The term of the position is anticipated to begin in April and is expected to go through the end of September. The term and scheduled days or hours may be increased or decreased depending upon the needs of the program and department. This position will be limited to work no more than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Under the direction of the District Manager and the direct supervision of the Operations Manager and/or Scientific Operations Manager, the SVA carries out routine assignments and related operations at SMVCD. The SVA carries out assignments, the details of which have been planned and organized by persons working at a higher level. These assignments may include working as part of a vector crew, as part of lab staff, or other work as directed.

Extra Help Vector Control Technician, San Gabriel Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District

Description: The San Gabriel Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District is seeking dedicated and self-motivated individuals to join the Operations Department. A successful candidate will have a passion for learning, enjoy working outdoors and be dedicated to protecting the residents of the San Gabriel Valley from vectors and vector-borne diseases. Extra-Help Vector Control Technicians (EHVCT) act as a layer of support for District activities during times of peak activity. Candidates hired will assist in a variety of functions within the District, working with the Operations Department and/or Surveillance Department. EHVCTs report to respective department directors. The Extra Help Vector Control Technician is an at-will, full-time, temporary, and non-benefited position. The duration of work is seasonal beginning in April and ending in October (approximately 6 months). The typical work week is Monday through Thursday 5:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Fridays off. RECRUITMENT SCHEDULE: Application Deadline: Thursday, March 14, 2024 Oral Interview: Week of March 18th. Exact date TBA. Position Start Date: Monday, April 8, 2024 The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Extra-help vector control technicians apply pesticides with low toxicity in areas where vectors are found or areas conducive to vector activity. May also perform house-to-house surveys to locate sources of vectors and implement assignments that are planned and organized by their supervisors. Assignments involve working individually or cooperatively within a team and include identifying, removing and/or treating sources of vectors, identifying and counting arthropods, collecting specimens, assisting in maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds, using hand tools to remove vegetation from sources of vectors, operating spray units and automotive equipment, using a back tank sprayer to apply pesticides, monitoring and maintaining surveillance equipment, recording work performed and performing related work as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Factors that are considered include, but are not limited to: Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience: Any experience, education, or training which demonstrates the ability and knowledge to perform the essential duties of the position. Licenses Required: Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License and maintain it throughout employment. WORKING CONDITIONS: Extra Help Vector Control Technicians work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances, and fumes, dust, and air contaminants, and exposure to vermin, insects, and parasites. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. Seasonal Vector Control Assistant, West Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District

Description: Basic Functions: This is an entry level position in vector control. The Vector Control Assistant gives assistance to an experienced technician in the inspection of vector sources, applying vector control related materials, and pursuing source reduction projects. Work is performed in accordance with established methods and techniques. The employee is closely supervised and receives specific assignments and guidance accompanied by detailed oral or written instructions. Desirable Qualifications: Knowledge of: • Basic arithmetic and biology of vectors; • Vector control equipment, vehicle operation, and safety practices; • Laws and regulations pertaining to vector control. Ability to: • Work independently and responsibly in the field; • Communicate effectively orally and in writing and understand and carry out written and oral instructions; • Work cooperatively with other personnel and the general public; • Accept assignments from persons working at a higher level; • Maintain field notes, records and maps; • Practice safety techniques and use good judgment in the use of vector control equipment. Education and Experience: • Minimum education equivalent to or graduation from high school. • Prior work experience or course work in pest or vector control related fields helps but not required. • Bilingual capabilities a plus but not required. Certificate: The appointee must be certified by the California Department of Health Services as a technician in Mosquito Control, Terrestrial Invertebrate Vector Control and Vertebrate Vector Control within twelve (12) months of the date of employment. Failure to obtain certification will result in separation from the District. License: The appointee must have a valid and appropriate California driver’s license and must be insurable with the District’s insurance carrier at all times throughout the employment. Biologist, Delta Mosquito and Vector Control District

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Biologist position differs from the lower class of Laboratory Technician II in that the Biologist must obtain and maintain the California Department of Public Health Vector Control Technician certification in Categories A, B, C, and D. Biologists are qualified to perform laboratory operations including vector surveillance, vector-borne pathogen surveillance, insecticide resistance monitoring, insectary tasks, and fish hatchery tasks. Additionally, Biologists assist in purchasing laboratory supplies, inventory, preparing reports, maintaining laboratory equipment and facilities, and are encouraged to actively participate in Mosquito and Vector Control Association (MVCAC) and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
