Job Description Under the direct supervision of the Department Head or assigned Supervisor, the Seasonal Helper – Laboratory Assignment assists with mosquito surveillance, setting and collecting mosquito traps, applied research, outreach, and general laboratory operations. Duties include indoor and outdoor work, driving, repetitive tasks, and following safety protocols. This is a seasonal, temporary position. Duties support laboratory operations, vector surveillance activities, and related field tasks. $22.00 – $24.00 Hourly. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The duties listed below are representative of work performed and may vary by assignment. This list is not intended to be all-inclusive. Maintains, repairs, and deploys surveillance equipment and supplies used to collect and assess mosquito and vector samples. Assists in maintaining vector colonies, biological control agents, sentinel birds, or related laboratory colonies as assigned. Collects dead bird specimens submitted by the public for testing. Uses microscopes to count, sort, and identify field collection samples by sex and species. Wears required personal protective equipment in accordance with training, product labels, and applicable laws and regulations. Collects and enters surveillance data using computers and mobile electronic devices, including smartphones, tablets, and laptop or desktop computers. Prepares documents, records, and reports for review by Supervisor. Reads and interprets operational maps and reports discrepancies to Supervisor. Operates District vehicles in compliance with District safety policies and applicable laws. Travels within assigned areas by foot, truck, or other equipment as required. Performs basic facility, grounds, and equipment maintenance and general labor tasks. Identifies and reports complex maintenance or operational issues to Supervisor. May assist with other related laboratory, surveillance, or field projects as assigned. May be required to work overtime, weekends, or holidays. May be exposed to mosquitoes and infectious diseases associated with mosquitoes and other vectors. Performs related duties as assigned. Work Schedule and Term This is a seasonal, temporary position anticipated to begin in April and continue through approximately September 30, 2026. The term and scheduled hours may be adjusted based on program needs. Employees must be available to work a minimum of 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Overtime, weekend, or holiday work may be required depending on operational needs. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience Equivalent to graduation from high school. Experience demonstrating possession of the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the duties of the position is desirable. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered at the sole discretion of the District. Licenses and Certifications Possession of a valid California driver’s license and the ability to be insured under the District’s insurance program. A valid license and insurability must be maintained throughout employment. Physical and Working Conditions Work is performed primarily in a laboratory and field environment. Duties may involve prolonged standing, use of microscopes, handling biological specimens, and operating vehicles and equipment. Employees may be exposed to mosquitoes and infectious diseases associated with mosquitoes and other vectors.
