Environmental Health Technician I (6108) – Department of Public Health

Under supervision, in an assigned district or specialty, conducts investigations, routine inspections and responds to complaints involving vector related issues, hazardous materials, solid waste, massage, and other general unsanitary conditions; may issue notices and citations; recommends corrective action; explains sanitation and/or hazardous materials and public health requirements related to code enforcement to the public, business community, and government agencies; utilizes techniques in effectively controlling vector related hazards; prepares records and reports; and performs related duties as required. 

Examples of Important and Essential Duties 

  1. Investigates complaints involving vector infestation sources, hazardous materials, illicit massage establishments, lack of required refuse collections service, and other general unsanitary conditions; advises the public and permitted businesses on the elimination of unsanitary conditions causing vector infestations, refuse collection service requirement, and hazardous materials storage requirements. 
  2. Inspects domestic, commercial and industrial properties for presence of vector breeding sources and other general unsanitary conditions; places traps and poisons and obtains specimens for laboratory analysis. 
  3. Issues notices of violation and citations and recommends corrective action; may issue a municipal citation, which is a summon to appear at administrative hearings; prepares chronologies for the Director’s hearings; performs follow-up inspections to ensure ordered corrections have been made; enforces provisions of health and safety codes such as those relating to the lack of required refuse collection service and/or unlawful disposal of refuse, debris and garbage accumulations; infestations of roaches, fleas, mosquitoes and other insects or vermin; illegal number of animals, or nuisances related to animal waste and odors; overgrown vegetation; and/or any condition which creates a health or safety hazard or constitutes a public nuisance; enforces applicable provisions of the health and safety code pertaining to hazardous materials storage and the management requirements. 
  4. Informs supervisor of unsanitary and unsafe conditions observed during investigation such as structural defects, fire hazards, inadequate plumbing, and broken sewer pipes; may refer these complaints and code violations to the appropriate departments. 
  5. May appear as witness in court hearings; attends meetings and educational conferences related to vector control; prepares various reports and performs other duties as assigned. 
  6. Investigates businesses to determine compliance with the Hazardous Materials & Waste Program or need to subscribe to refuse collection service for residential and commercial properties; inspects the regulated community for compliance of all applicable laws, regulations, and prerequisites for the Green Business Recognition Program. 
  7. Evaluates documentation and/or reports submitted by businesses for completeness; provides assistance in completing documentation forms and/or reports required for submission. 

The Environmental Health Technician I performs other related duties as assigned/required.

Vector Control Technician, Mosquito & Vector Management District of Santa Barbara County

Job Description: After successfully completing a six-month probationary period, fulfilling training requirements and satisfactory work performance, the employee will be promoted to permanent status as Vector Control Technician I or II (depending on qualifications and experience). Under direction, work for this class includes the inspection and surveillance of disease and nuisance vector sources and applying control measures according to Federal and State Laws, Regulations, and District Policies. Work is performed in accordance with established methods and techniques, but the employee will exercise considerable independent judgment in vector inspection, surveillance and control assignments. The supervisor and lead staff provide guidance and direction through instruction and reviews of work performance. The appointee for the class will work in varying outdoor environments in existing weather conditions. The trainee will be exposed to various pesticides, organic materials common in vector-producing environments and disease/nuisance vectors including venomous and stinging insects.

Vector Control Aide (Seasonal), Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District

Laboratory Aide (Seasonal), Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District

Job Description: Under the supervision of the Scientific Programs Manager, assists with field surveys for vectors and vector-borne diseases; assists with care/maintenance of sentinel chicken flocks; records data and performs routine data entry; assists with laboratory assays and applied research projects; keeps laboratory and lab equipment clean and organized; assists with repair and maintenance of field surveillance equipment, but may include other work needed by the District.

Biologist, San Joaquin County Mosquito & Vector Control District

Under the direction of the Entomologist, the Biologist will carry out vector and vector-borne disease surveillance plans prescribed by the District; evaluate pesticide efficacy and resistance monitoring; maintain records of results and prepare reports; participate in public education and outreach activities; attend and present in scientific meetings; conduct scientific research projects and other laboratory or field work as needed to fulfil the District program; assist in supervising seasonal employees; assume supervisory duties to direct laboratory staff to perform daily work in the absence of the Entomologist.

Maintenance Specialist/Vector Control Technician, Napa County MAD

Job Description: The Maintenance Specialist/Vector Control Technician is an active member of the District’s staff who, under the direction of the District Manager, maintains District equipment and facilities, assists in planning, organizing and evaluating the District’s facilities and equipment maintenance program, and also performs field operational work activities. This position requires approximately 30% of work time to be spent in the field helping manage potential vector sources and answering public requests for service.
