Vector Specialist, Metropolitan Mosquito Control District

Job Description:
POSITION TITLE: Vector Specialist DEPARTMENT: Entomology REPORTS TO: Vector Ecologist FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt Applications Accepted : 1/20/2026 – 2/3/2026 Hourly Pay Range : $28.26- $42.40 Resume and Cover Letter Required CLASS SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Vector Ecologist, the Vector Specialist will carry out vector and vector-borne disease surveillance, control, and research in support of District objectives This individual will: Facilitate and troubleshoot in-house pathogen testing Coordinate and prioritize vector projects Active participation in surveillance and control operations, including bicycle-based treatment programs Assist in vector-borne disease investigations Support the Quality Assurance program in evaluation of control product efficacy and resistance Conduct scientific research projects and perform related laboratory and field work Maintain accurate and organized records; prepare technical summaries and reports ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Outbreak Prevention and Investigation Participate in public education and outreach activities to promote awareness and prevention Assist in vector and vector-borne disease investigations Collaborate with Field Services to coordinate prevention programs and respond to vector and vector-borne disease outbreaks under the guidance of the Vector Ecologist Coordinate bicycle-based treatment program Laboratory Operations and Research Conduct laboratory pathogen testing using molecular and biochemical protocols (e.g., RAMP, ELISA, WB, PCR/RT-PCR); troubleshoot assays as needed Assist in implementing and managing entomology department research projects Assist in evaluating new technologies or protocols for vector surveillance and control Assist in rearing and managing mosquito colonies for identification and resistance testing Verify efficacy of control products through laboratory and field trials Data Quality and Communication Ensure accuracy, completeness, and integrity of vector surveillance data within MMCD’s data management system Ensure accuracy, completeness, and integrity of MMCD’s mapping data Assist in preparing technical reports, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs),grant applications, and compliance documentation Represent the District in interagency meetings, conferences, and community engagement events as needed Project Management Implement strategies to protect public health from vector-borne diseases and nuisance pests in an environmentally conscious manner Assist in hiring, training, and coordinating seasonal staff Plan, prioritize, and organize tasks; establish timelines; monitor progress; and optimize/maintain resources to achieve organizational goals Safety and Compliance: Follow established safety procedures in all field and laboratory activities. Identify potential risks, assess safety protocols, and provide recommendations for safety guideline updates as necessary. Actively contribute to District’s culture of safety MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, epidemiology, entomology, environmental health or related field, plus two years of professional experience in research and/or field operations; or equivalent combination of education and experience MN Pesticide Applicator license (or ability to obtain upon employment) While this position generally works normal business hours, you maybe required to work overtime and non-business hours KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED: Safe and effective implementation of vector surveillance and control protocols Epidemiology of mosquito- and tick-borne diseases and related public health risks Sample preparation, use of diagnostic molecular and/or biochemical assays, and troubleshooting issues Accurate recordkeeping and data management of surveillance, testing, and experimental activities Experimental design, standardized data collection, and statistical analysis Team leadership, planning and coordination of activities Manage multiple changing priorities and meet deadlines Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills to engage and inform diverse audiences Analyze and interpret data; prepare clear reports KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS PREFERRED: Foster trust and accountability within a team Apply biological and ecological principles to monitor programs Interpret program objectives, work independently and collaboratively Safety practices and regulatory compliance, especially in pesticide application Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams) Proficiency with mapping and spatial data management software (QGIS preferred) Riding a bicycle while adhering to traffic laws Bicycle maintenance PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Mobility: Frequent stooping, kneeling, crawling, standing, walking, lifting, and bike riding on uneven terrain Exertion: Move and transport up to 50 pounds occasionally and/or use force frequently or constantly to manipulate, lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Duties also include sedentary activities, such as operating a vehicle, performing laboratory bench work, and completing desk-based tasks. Seasonal Vector Control Assistant, Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control Technician

Job Description:

Reports to: Field Supervisors, Scientific Programs Manager

DEFINITION Under the direction of the Field Supervisors or the Scientific Programs Manager the Seasonal Vector Assistant (VCA) supports the District’s vector control and surveillance operations. This seasonal role may involve both fieldwork and support tasks related to mosquito and vector control, surveillance, and research, including disease prevention and public health initiatives. The position is full-time, seasonal, and not to exceed 1,500 hours per year. SCOPE OF POSITION The Seasonal Vector Control Assistant plays a key role in supporting vector control efforts in the field and assisting in surveillance tasks. Responsibilities include performing field surveillance and control activities, assisting in research, and maintaining equipment and facilities. The role also involves handling biological specimens and adhering to health and safety standards in both field and District environments.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES May include but are not limited to: •Routine mosquito and vector control operations in the field.

  • Field collection of mosquitoes, ticks, and other vectors.
  • Collecting mosquito fish Trap placement for mosquito surveillance.
  • Assisting with larval and adult mosquito identification.
  • Participating in research projects related to vector control and public health.
  • Maintaining District field equipment, vehicles, and grounds. •Assisting with service requests for mosquito, rodent and yellowjacket control.
  • Assisting in maintaining insectary colonies, as needed.
  • Adhering to biosafety and universal precautions in both field and laboratory settings.
  • Maintaining the laboratory and assisting with various research tasks as directed.

Vector Control Technician, Mosquito & Vector Management District of Santa Barbara County

Job Description: After successfully completing a six-month probationary period, fulfilling training requirements and satisfactory work performance, the employee will be promoted to permanent status as Vector Control Technician I or II (depending on qualifications and experience). Under direction, work for this class includes the inspection and surveillance of disease and nuisance vector sources and applying control measures according to Federal and State Laws, Regulations, and District Policies. Work is performed in accordance with established methods and techniques, but the employee will exercise considerable independent judgment in vector inspection, surveillance and control assignments. The supervisor and lead staff provide guidance and direction through instruction and reviews of work performance. The appointee for the class will work in varying outdoor environments in existing weather conditions. The trainee will be exposed to various pesticides, organic materials common in vector-producing environments and disease/nuisance vectors including venomous and stinging insects.

Maintenance Specialist/Vector Control Technician, Napa County MAD
