Description: Heluna Health (HH) and the Vector-Borne Disease Section (VBDS) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are recruiting for the position of a Vector Biologist for Vector-Borne Disease Surveillance Projects, including in the National Parks.
The Vector Biologist position is a contract position responsible for working with VBDS staff to conduct prevention, surveillance, and control of vector-borne diseases in National Parks and other regions in California. Work will be performed under the supervision of the Supervising Public Health Biologist, VBDS Coastal Region. Duties performed will help reduce the risk of vector-borne disease transmission to California residents, visitors, and employees of the National Park Service through the statewide vector-borne disease surveillance program.
Conduct laboratory assays as indicated to test insects and animals for evidence of vector-borne disease pathogens
Identify rodents, ticks, mosquitoes, and fleas using taxonomic keys
Conduct surveillance of vector-borne diseases, including plague, hantavirus, and tick-borne diseases in Yosemite National Park, Lassen Volcanic National Park, other national parks, and elsewhere in the state as needed
Collaborate on vector-borne disease surveillance and control research projects
Provide supervisor with program and project work plans, progress reports, and activity reports; prepare summary tables and graphs
Conduct related activities as needed to ensure continued program excellence
Drive state vehicles to areas in California as needed for consultation, field work, and presentations
Perform other related duties as required
