Surveillance Assistant (Seasonal), Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District

Description: Under the direction of the Scientific Programs Manager (SPM) and Lead Biologist (LB), the
Surveillance Assistant (SA) supports the daily workings of the laboratory by carrying out all
tasks assigned by the SPM and LB.

The SA may participate in various fieldwork activities and research projects as assigned by the
SPM and LB. This laboratory and fieldwork supports the primary objectives of the District in
its effortsto control disease-carrying vectors and minimize their potential threat to public health
and comfort. This is a full-time seasonal position, not to exceed 1,500 hours per calendar year.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Include but are not limited to:
▪ Field collection of mosquitoes and trap placement.
▪ May assist in larval and adult mosquito identification.
▪ Collection of ticks and other vectors in the field.
▪ May assist in maintenance of the District’s insectary and mosquito colonies.
▪ Participate in the field collection of wild birds submitted by the public via the California
Department of Public Health dead bird program.
▪ Process various biological specimens (tissues, blood, whole carcasses, etc.) to be tested at
the District laboratory or sent to diagnostic laboratories for evaluation of disease pathogens
in vectors.
▪ Maintain the laboratory in a clean and efficient manner.
▪ Maintenance and care of sentinel chicken flocks may be assigned.
▪ Field work including mosquito and vector control and related research projects may be
assigned as needed.
WORK HOURS
▪ 40 hour workweek, Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (Hours may vary according to
daily work schedule.)
▪ Overtime work may be required

Pay rate is $23/hr
