Extra Help Vector Control Technician, San Gabriel Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District

Description: The San Gabriel Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District is seeking dedicated and self-motivated individuals to join the Operations Department. A successful candidate will have a passion for learning, enjoy working outdoors and be dedicated to protecting the residents of the San Gabriel Valley from vectors and vector-borne diseases. Extra-Help Vector Control Technicians (EHVCT) act as a layer of support for District activities during times of peak activity. Candidates hired will assist in a variety of functions within the District, working with the Operations Department and/or Surveillance Department. EHVCTs report to respective department directors. The Extra Help Vector Control Technician is an at-will, full-time, temporary, and non-benefited position. The duration of work is seasonal beginning in April and ending in October (approximately 6 months). The typical work week is Monday through Thursday 5:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Fridays off. Position Start Date: Monday, April 8, 2024 The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Extra-help vector control technicians apply pesticides with low toxicity in areas where vectors are found or areas conducive to vector activity. May also perform house-to-house surveys to locate sources of vectors and implement assignments that are planned and organized by their supervisors. Assignments involve working individually or cooperatively within a team and include identifying, removing and/or treating sources of vectors, identifying and counting arthropods, collecting specimens, assisting in maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds, using hand tools to remove vegetation from sources of vectors, operating spray units and automotive equipment, using a back tank sprayer to apply pesticides, monitoring and maintaining surveillance equipment, recording work performed and performing related work as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Factors that are considered include, but are not limited to: Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience: Any experience, education, or training which demonstrates the ability and knowledge to perform the essential duties of the position. Licenses Required: Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License and maintain it throughout employment. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver’s license and reflects driving records during course of employment with the District. Extra-help Vector Control Technicians must be insurable with District’s insurance carrier. Knowledge of: General biology and arithmetic Ability to: Work cooperatively and effectively with other employees and the public; Practice safety and good judgment; Operate a vehicle safely; Accept and implement reasonable assignments; Operate and maintain specialized vector control tools, vehicles and equipment; Apply pesticides according to instructions; Maintain field notes, records, and maps; Prepare reports; Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing; Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Read, interpret and use policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Extra-help Vector Control Technicians must be sighted with measurable depth perception; have a minimum of single ear aided hearing; be able to speak and write effectively in English; frequently* operate a motor vehicle; frequently* traverse uneven ground such as fields, dirt banks, stream beds, and shallow ponds; frequently* bend at the knees and waist to inspect sources; regularly* carry a 40 pound sprayer on one’s back over uneven surfaces; occasionally* operate specialized equipment such as boats, all-terrain vehicles, and other mechanized equipment; periodically* climb ladders; and periodically* assist in lifting objects overhead weighing more than 60 pounds. * Periodically – Activity or condition exists less than 25% of the time. * Occasionally -Activity or condition exists 25 – 50% of the time. * Regularly – Activity or condition exists 50 – 75% of the time. * Frequently – Activity or condition exists more than 75% of the time. WORKING CONDITIONS: Extra Help Vector Control Technicians work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances, and fumes, dust, and air contaminants, and exposure to vermin, insects, and parasites. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. BACKGROUND CHECK AND POST-OFFER PHYSICAL EXAMINATION Qualifying candidates must complete a background check and physical examination. A medical doctor must certify that a candidate is physically able to perform the duties of the position and is free of illegal substances as determined by a drug screening. A medical doctor and/or laboratory designated by the District shall perform the post-offer physical examination and drug screening and the District shall pay all costs.
